Guido H. F. Verbeck
Samurai of the Saga Clan, government official, statesman. Born in Saga. His father was a samurai of the Saga Clan and a scholar of National Learning (kokugaku). After serving as an instructor at the clan-built school Chienkan, he studied under Guido H. F. Verbeck and mastered English studies. After the Meiji Restoration, he served in the new government and drafted "Seitai-sho" (Form of Government) with Takachika Fukuoka. In 1871, he assumed the office of foreign minister and engaged in the negotiations over the Maria Luz Incident. In 1873, he lost in the controversy over the Seikanron (conquer Korea debate) and resigned from public office. In the following year, he joined in establishing the Aikoku Koto (Public Party of Patriots) and with Taisuke Itagaki and Shojiro Goto and others, submitted a memorandum calling for the establishment of a popularly elected parliament to the government. Later he served in the Imperial court as a court councillor, privy councillor, and vice-chairman of the Privy Council. He also served as home minister in the first Matsukata cabinet.

An email I sent out to all my groups
Every day I swear to God I get up wondering what's in store............ OMG! ......and believe it or not, I never know. I may have had stuffs on my mind right before going off to sleep and that might be the last thing I think of upon awakening.
I remember reading 'America What Went Wrong' and wondering WTF? It was a rude wake-up call that's for sure. I had been in bookkeeping for a long time and helped do the payroll and the deductions and such but I NEVER knew a thing, NOT ONE DAMN THING.
I remember I had signed up to take an economics class in college............. hmmmmmm I fell outta my desk on the first day and chipped my tail bone. WOW, was that painful but I was determined to continue so I went off to the doctor and he told me there was nothing to do but wait it out. The pain would eventually subside and if I wanted to sit comfortably at all to get myself a donut pillow. He wrote out the presciption. (I never remember the spelling as my dyslexia kicks in so subscription and perscription????????) ......and thinking of it, maybe I was damned lucky he didn't suggest pain pills cause that coulda been a whole different set of problems, eh? Addiction............ OMG, I had a problem for a while with alcohol but thank goodness I wasn't so far in I couldn't get out. (Maybe again God's intervention.)
I took the prescription for the pillow........... hmmmmm, a prescription for a pillow, eh? YEP, and I was determined to go to that damned class.......... Well, I'll tell you one thing, it was painful enuff at home trying to get comfortable even with the help of 2 little beautiful girls helping me out by waiting on me hand and foot for that whole week.
I drove over to Los Banos from my home about 20 miles and I went into my economics class........ and put down my donut pillow and sat down in tears...........
I got up and left immediately hobbling and crying all the way to the car and from there home, it was excruciating.
The pain eventually got better and some 35-40 years later, I don't feel a thing. BUT, I didn't go back to economics ever as that was simply not in the cards and to this day, I don't regret it. (I wish sometimes that I had the knowledge but PTSD wasn't gonna let me forget that awful, horrible, painful experience.) Maybe, after all, GOD works in strange ways, eh?
I've been thru a couple of physically painful experiences but have been VERY lucky not to have had to endure much in that area. I figured God gave me enuff with all the Mental stuffs I've had to endure. (......and No, I don't think I am or was crazy, I think it was the EVIL in charge of the world and the brainwashing.)
The only thing I wish I could redo is my relationship with my parents. (They were the poor white people that Shirley Sherrod spoke of) I wish I had known then what I know now about the world and I would have stuck by them in their dealing with the physical sicknesses (cancer) of the world and all the medications and BS they had to endure to live as long as they did. (Shirley S. and I were born in the same year........ hee hee.)
I used to say I hated my mother because of my abusive childhood but had I known then what I know now about her, I would have loved her and hugged her a lot more.............. IT IS ALL ABOUT FAMILY you know and my parents had a simply horrible existance fighting this damn system in the thralls of tons and tons of meds and chemotherapy and kobalt treatments.........

Washington - Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke played down fears expressed by U.S. lawmakers that China might shake the U.S. economy by selling significant chunks of the U.S. debt it holds.
In his first appearance before the Senate as the head of the U.S. central bank, Bernanke was pressed by Banking Committee members on the question of the U.S. economy's vulnerability to changes in China's U.S.-dollar denominated assets.
But Bernanke said he is not "deeply" concerned about the issue.
"I don't think that the Chinese ownership of U.S. assets is so large as to put our country at risk economically," he said February 16.
At the end of 2005, China, with $820 billion in such assets, was the second-largest holder of U.S. debt after Japan, which held about $10 billion more.

This week, readers are worried about the about the dangers of the steady rise in U.S. debt – after back-to-back warnings from sources as diverse as Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and investment guru Warren Buffet. Dick in Michigan wants to know just where this borrowed money comes from; Kim in Maryland is worried that foreign lenders like China may be gaining an unhealthy upper hand in its relations with the U.S.
The Bush administration talks about spending a million here and a billion there adding up to trillions for the war. Since the country is so far in debt, where is all this money they are talking about spending, coming from? I know it is borrowed, but from whom?

The money is borrowed from buyers of Treasury securities -- which are basically a big batch of IOUs that are auctioned off every three months. As the auction date approaches, the Treasury figures out how much it will need to pay off old debt and cover the government’s latest round of overspending.
When the auction day comes, buyers submit bids in the form of the interest rate they’re willing to accept. You can choose to make a competitive bid (you ask for a specific rate) or a non-competitive bid (you agree to accept the average rate of other winning bids.) When all the bids are in, the Treasury starts at the bottom, taking the lowest bids until it has collected enough money to cover that round of borrowing.
The money flows in from all over the place: from individual investors and corporations, pension funds and governments, both in the U.S. and around the world. Basically, anyone with a large amount of cash looking for a safe place to put it is a good candidate for holding U.S. Treasury debt.
So just who are these lenders? As of last June (the latest complete breakdown available), the biggest holder of Treasury debt was the U.S. government itself, with about 52 percent of the total $8.5 trillion in paper that's out there. Most of the government’s holdings are massive savings accounts for programs like Social Security and Medicare. Just as you may prefer to keep your Individual Retirement Account in the safe Treasury bonds, the folks who manage the Social Security Trust Fund are looking for a secure investment, too.

The investigators did not rush to judgment - the conclusion of the investigation was predetermined by the US and S. Korea. There is a pretty credible rumor going around intelligence circles that the sinking of the ship was the work of the CIA rather than the N. Koreans. The main purpose of this Gulf of Tonkin type operation was to pressure the Japanese into accepting the Okinawa base. Putting pressure on North Korea as well as the Chinese was an added bonus.

The investigators did not rush to judgment - the conclusion of the investigation was predetermined by the US and S. Korea. There is a pretty credible rumor going around intelligence circles that the sinking of the ship was the work of the CIA rather than the N. Koreans. The main purpose of this Gulf of Tonkin type operation was to pressure the Japanese into accepting the Okinawa base. Putting pressure on North Korea as well as the Chinese was an added bonus.

Uribe met with President Bush and "more than a dozen Democrats" on May 2. Congressional Democrats are "refusing to ratify" a U.S.-Colombia free trade deal, due to labor and human rights concerns. Uribe "has been dogged by accusations that close political allies backed and benefited from the murderous right-wing militias" in Colombia. "Eight pro-government lawmakers have already been arrested." Last month, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D.-Vt.) "froze $55 million in aid to Colombia's military over concerns about its human rights record."

Mutual assured destruction (M.A.D.) is a doctrine of military strategy and national security policy in which a full-scale use of nuclear weapons by two opposing sides would effectively result in the destruction of both the attacker and the defender.[1] It is based on the theory of deterrence according to which the deployment of strong weapons is essential to threaten the enemy in order to prevent the use of the very same weapons. The strategy is effectively a form of Nash equilibrium, in which both sides are attempting to avoid their worst possible outcome, in this case, nuclear annihilation.

More than 125 Arrested in Nationwide Child Pornography

NEWARK – More than 125 individuals have been arrested nationwide, including 17 in New Jersey, on charges for subscribing to websites depicting hardcore child pornography involving children as young as infants engaged in sexual activities with adults,U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie and Immigration and Customs Enforcement Special-Agent-in-Charge Kyle Hutchins announced today.
Many of the defendants were arrested this morning on Criminal Complaints and Indictments which have been unsealed throughout the country.
The nationwide arrests stem from an investigation known as Operation Emissary, which was initiated by the New Jersey offices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in conjunction with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. The investigation focused on a commercial website offering access to videos and images of hardcore child pornography. The website, which was accessible via the Internet, alerted would be subscribers that subscribing to the website was illegal and warned them to be discreet about their purchase. The arrests represent individuals who subscribed to the website over a
period of approximately 2 to 3 months at the end of 2005 and early 2006. Arrests have been made in more than 22 states to date. In addition, more than 225 search warrants have been executed on the personal computers of individual subscribers, and dozens of additional arrests are expected as that evidence is reviewed.
The arrests include a significant number of individuals who have been previously convicted of sex offenses against minors, and have led to the discovery of individuals who have been actively molesting children. More than one dozen convicted sex offenders have been arrested to date. Among the defendants that have been arrested who have been convicted of sex offenses against minors or against whom evidence has been recovered regarding molestations that have yet to culminate in a conviction are the following:
• Michael Norris, Vancouver, WA: A former camp counselor/medical assistant at a
Bible camp as well as a former lay youth minister at a church, Norris admitted to
sexually abusing at least four children and manufacturing pornographic images of at
least two of them when ICE agents executed a search warrant at his residence to seize his computer.
• Genaro Vela, Mission, TX: Vela, a longtime Scout Leader and middle school
coach, was found in possession of more than 4,000 images and videos of child
pornography pursuit to the Operation Emissary lead. Vela was arrested the day after
the search by the Mission Police Department for the aggravated sexual assault of two
minors. The state charges are pending, but Vela pled guilty to federal charges for
receiving child pornography on or about September 5, 2006. Sentencing on the
federal charges remains pending.

• Martin Dolamore, San Diego, CA: During the execution of the Operation
Emissary search warrant, Dolamore admitted to molesting at least eight children
over a period of 30 years. Dolamore described his strategy for selecting his targets for molestation and claimed to be very proficient at pinpointing vulnerable children. He also indicated that he had traveled overseas to have sex with children in the Philippines.
• Wendell Newkirk, Jr., Fairdale, KY: Upon execution of the Operation Emissary
search warrant, agents found Newkirk to be in possession of hundreds of images
of child pornography, including numerous printed images, printouts of stories
relating to pedophilia and incest. Newkirk had been convicted in 1997 for rape and
sodomy of a girl under the age of 12 and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
• Klifford Rose, Saramento, CA: Rose admitted to purchasing access to multiple
child pornography websites. He was also found in possession of a handheld
video camera with a videotape depicting him sexually assaulting an 8-year old girl.
As a result, Rose was arrested and charged with 8 counts of Lewd Acts on a Child
Under the Age of 13, under California state law.
• David Troglin, Kingman, AZ. Troglin had been previously convicted in the State
of Idaho for the molestation of two 9-year old girls. Upon execution of the Operation Emissary search warrant, Troglin was found to be in possession of at least 450 child pornography images and videos.
• Robert Shaffer, Bethlehem, PA: Shaffer, who was found in possession of more than
100 images and videos of child pornography, has two prior convictions for sex
offenses. One of those convictions related to the rape of a 10-year old girl.
• Donald Wilson, Midland, TX: Wilson, who had been previously convicted of a
sexual offense against a minor, was found in possession of numerous images of
child pornography. Upon entering his residence, ICE agents discovered that he
had framed some of these images and hung them on his bedroom wall and used
an image of child pornography for the screensaver on his computer.
Due to the assessment that these individuals posed a high-risk to the community, each was arrested at the time that the searches were conducted or shortly thereafter.
Today, 14 people were arrested or surrendered in New Jersey as part of the wider
investigation targeting individual subscribers to hard-core child pornography internet sites connected to Operation Emissary. They and another three suspects already charged were found during the course of the investigation to have possessed or received child pornography on their home or work computers. Initial court appearances will be occurring at 2:30 p.m.

Arrests in New Jersey have included a Hi-Nella police officer, a Customs and Border
Protection officer and a clinical researcher for a pharmaceutical company. Defendants arrested outside of New Jersey have included police officers, military personnel, corrections officers and high school teachers.
“Our intention is to attack child pornography at all levels – including the demand that fuels the market in child exploitation.” Christie said. “This case should clearly demonstrate to those pedophiles who believe that the Internet provides them with anonymity, that they are clearly mistaken. The Internet has a global reach, but so do we.” Christie added that “the significant numbers of convicted child molesters and other individuals who appear to have molested children who have been arrested as part of Operation Emissary should make clear that there is a substantial and disturbing link between those who pay for access to child
pornography on the Internet and those who victimize children.”
“As this investigation amply illustrates, there is no safe haven for child sex predators. The Internet does not serve to insulate those who would consume and collect the images of children being sexually assaulted and exploited, and we will track you down,” said Hutchins.
"Among those arrested, we identified numerous individuals who were sex offenders, child molesters or had access to children," said Julie L. Myers, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "It is particularly troubling when we find individuals who not only trade in images of the exploitation of children online, but attempt to exploit children offline as well."

Despite being charged in a Criminal Complaint or Indictment, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and federal law.
Christie credited Special Agents of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, under the direction of Kyle Hutchins, in Newark. Christie also thanked Mastercard and VISA for their cooperation and assistance in the investigation.

New Jersey Defendants
Each of the following New Jersey defendants was arrested or surrendered today or were charged in recent weeks as part of the Operation Emissary investigation. Each was charged either with possession of child pornography or receipt of child pornography, the distinction being that some defendants may or may not have possessed the images on their computers at the time of arrest.
A conviction for possession of child pornography under 18 U.S.C. 2252A(a)(5)(B) carries a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. A conviction for receipt of child pornography carries with it a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years imprisonment, and a 5 year mandatory minimum sentence.
Individuals who have a prior sexual offense conviction involving a minor or a prior child pornography-related offense conviction face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years if convicted of possession and a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years if convicted of receipt. After their initial appearances, the defendants’ cases would next be presented to a grand jury for potential indictment on those charges.
